Azerbaijan’s Independence Day marked in Vatican

An official reception marking May 28 – Independence Day of Azerbaijan – was held at the country’s Embassy in the Holy See.

The event brought together Vatican officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps, business community members, and Azerbaijanis living in Italy.

In his remarks, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the Holy See Ilgar Mukhtarov noted that 107 years ago, on May 28, 1918, the Declaration of Independence was adopted, leading to the establishment of the first secular democratic republic in the Muslim world.

The Ambassador highlighted that following the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991, the country’s cooperation with the Holy See has significantly expanded in the political, cultural, and other spheres.

Ilgar Mukhtarov emphasized that, under the auspices of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Azerbaijan has implemented numerous global initiatives to preserve Christian heritage, and hailed the Vatican’s support in these efforts.

He also noted that Azerbaijan proudly and successfully hosted COP29 in 2024 and continues to play an active and constructive role on the international stage as a member and former chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, extended his congratulations on the occasion and wished the people of Azerbaijan continued progress, prosperity, and well-being. He stressed that the Holy See and Azerbaijan are united by strong ties of friendship.

The ceremony also featured a photo exhibition showcasing the history of relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See.
