Press release 17 October 2025

First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva visited Vatican Apostolic Library

Archbishop Monsignor Giovanni Cesare Pagazzi, Head of the Apostolic Library and the Apostolic Archives, provided First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva with detailed information about the historical manuscripts and sources that have been restored and digitized with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

It was noted that in 2013 and 2014, 75 manuscripts of great historical and cultural significance for Azerbaijan — including those related to the preservation of Turkic-language heritage — discovered in the Vatican Apostolic Library, were restored and digitalized with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. It was also mentioned that on September 10, 2025, a new Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the Vatican Apostolic Library, and the Vatican Apostolic Archives.

The parties emphasized that cooperation with the Vatican Apostolic Library and the Vatican Apostolic Archives will provide Azerbaijani scholars and researchers with access to rare manuscripts, ancient maps, and valuable publications in various languages preserved in these institutions. This partnership will also create opportunities to obtain new and significant information about Azerbaijan’s historical and cultural heritage in the years to come.

At the conclusion of the visit, First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva presented the Apostolic Library with a selection of books and publications dedicated to the history, nature, and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan.
